It is to be noted that Varanasi had initially been a pioneer state to have given birth to several musicians and writers, poets and philosophers alike. It was only a matter of time for it to develop into a concrete place of education and it came later on in the form of the Banaras Hindu University. This is the center for education of two separate branches of study including the Institute of Medical Science and the Institute of Technology, which have produced several greats in recent times also.

The university had been founded by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya in the year 1914, with aid from Dr. Annie Besant, who played an influential role then. The university, with 128 independent branches to choose from, is amongst the 3 largest universities in the world and is by far the largest in Asia. In fact, the entire plot of land on which the University has been built had been donated by the then Maharaja of Varanasi or Kashi. Having a capacity of just above 15000, the Banaras Hindu University has several different fields to study on by the students.

The institute can boast of some of the best faculty members from all over the nation, for which students from every corner of the country try desperately to crack its entrance exams and get admitted here. In recent years, the institute has become well known through its abbreviated form of BHU and is the place of learning that assures real quality for its students.
