Varanasi, also known as “the city of temples” is situated in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. This religious city of India is located on the west (left) bank of the River Ganges and is also regarded as the holy capital of India. Temples in Varanasi
There are more than two thousand temples in Varanasi, which include some gigantic monuments and wayside shrines. It is said that almost every street of the city has a temple nearby. One of the most famous of all the temples is the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, which is also known as the Golden Temple. History suggests that the temple was built by Maharani Ahilvabai Holkar in 1780 and is situated on the outskirts of the River Ganges. The temple also has a Naubatkhana built in the front by Mohammed Ibrahim Khan in 1785 during the rule of Governor General Warren Hastings.

One more temple in Varanasi, famous primarily for the presence of hundreds of monkeys, is the Durga Temple. Its also nicknamed as the ‘Monkey Temple’. This temple was built by a Bengali Queen in the 18th century and is visited by thousands of Hindu devotees during the time of Navratri. Durga Temple has an ancient North Indian architecture belonging to the Nagara Style.
Another popular temple in Varanasi is the Sankat Mochan Temple which has been dedicated to Lord Hanuman. This temple also attracts a lot of pilgrims during the various cultural and religious festivals.
