Being one of the holiest cities of India and holding on to the cultures and rituals of the age old Indian heritage, Varanasi has been the pilgrimage for several individuals. Throughout the year the place is kept alive with several cultural events and holy festivals, which depict the impact of ancient rituals till date. Although most of these festivals are also celebrated in other parts of the nation, the auspicious atmosphere of Varanasi beats them all.

Festivals like that of the Buddha Purnima, Karthik Purnima, Ramlila, Bharat Milap, Mahashivratri, Dhrupad Mela, Hanuman Jayanti and Nakkatyya are some of the major ones. Through these festivals, the people are made aware of the several ancient doctrines of Hindu mythology and also the general belief of the people is revealed.

The Buddha Purnima is the festival to commemorate the Birth of Lord Gautama Buddha, and is celebrated with great pomp and devotion at Sarnath. Even the Bharat Milap is celebrated in grand style on the day after Dussehra, to commemorate the return of Lord Rama back to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile.

Karthik Purnima, also known as Dev Dipawali, is a grand occasion when the entire bank of the River Ganges is beautifully lit with small earthen lamps. The entire city gets magnanimous on the day of Mahashivratri, when thousands of pilgrims overflow the population of the city. Being one of the many holy places dedicated to Lord Shiva, this is the most auspicious one and attracts several individuals at this point of the year, which crowds the entire place.
