The major attraction of the city is of course some of the finest handicrafts of the nation through several mediums. The most popular among these are the clay and wooden toys along with other works of the copperware and brassware. If this were not enough, the jewelry work with precious stones is also very popular here, though they are not native to the place; the designs being adapted from the Mughal times are still made use of in these jewelries.
Furthermore, the sarees that are designed here are exquisite, especially the Banarasi saree, which is often seen in the form of bridal wear among Hindus. The craftsmen take great care in making this heavily woven material, as they do for the Jari work. Again, they also make sarees of silk weaving. Each of their technique is unique to the place, like the carpet weaving that is knotted with hands in the Mirzapuri and Bhadohi styles.
The areas of Vishwanath Gali, Dashwamedh Gali, Gadoulia and Chowk are the major attractions for shopping at Varanasi.
